My visit with a true hero: Walter Hoye
Yesterday evening, I had the chance to visit a friend of mine who is a guest at the Alameda County Jail. It was, as I explained to him, the first time I had ever visited someone in jail. But knowing what he was imprisoned for, I could not in good conscience stay away. I could not sit idly by without letting him know how his much his sacrifice meant to me and so many others.
“What did he do?” you ask?
That is the same question my kids asked when I told them that I would be going to support my good friend in jail.
You can imagine their confusion when I told them that Rev. Walter Hoye was imprisoned for standing in front of Planned Parenthood, holding a sign that read, “Jesus Loves You and Your Baby. Can We Help You?”
“Can they do that?” my son inquired after a moment of stunned silence?
Apparently, they can in Oakland, California; one of several cities that has passed an ordinance creating a 100 foot “Free Speech Free” zone around abortion clinics. Specifically the ordinance makes it unlawful, and punishable by up to one year in jail, to knowingly approach within eight (8) feet of any person seeking to enter an abortion clinic, without their consent, to counsel or distribute literature to them or to urge them not to obtain an abortion. And it appears that Rev. Hoye being in front of Planned Parenthood with his sign made him guilty of violating this ordinance.
But what the enemy meant for evil, God is turned for good. Walter shared with us how he has been able to witness to his fellow inmates and even the guards. The stacks of letters he receives on a daily basis has others inquiring as to who he is and why he is jail. He has also taken to purchasing food and other items from the prison commissary and giving it to the newer inmates. He does this even as he himself has chosen to fast from food during his incarceration.
His sacrifice has not been without victory. He tells of how he led five men to faith in Christ during his first week in prison. Right outside the prison, other pastors have taken to holding prayer vigils every Sunday evening for Walter. Last week was the first and about 20 were present. This week that number was doubled. And I believe it will double again next week as more and more people hear Pastor Hoye’s story. I myself, have been moved by the numbers of people who have responded to the injustice of Walter’s incarceration; not only prolife activists, but those who cannot believe that someone would be imprisoned for exercising their God given right to free speech.
Now, I cannot say that Walter’s time jail has been without challenges. Walter is notably tired and in need f rest. He explained to us that because of the crowded conditions and the fact that many of his fellow inmates would stay up all night, there were not many opportunities to sleep. His already slim frame was visibly weakened as the result of his fast. His only nourishment coming from the 4oz containers of apple juice that his fellow inmates save and share with him.
I share this with you, not to illicit your sympathy, rather to inspire your action. It is my hope that Walter’s commitment to stand for what he believes in would help others to give up their roles as mere spectators and encourage them to get in the game.
That is not to say that we all have to go to prison. But we can help. Walter has asked everyone to continue writing to him while he is in jail. The letters both encourage him and provide opportunities for him to witness to others. You can write to him at:
Walter B. Hoye II
PFN# BGR852
Santa Rita Jail
5325 Broder Blvd.
Dublin, CA 94568-3309
Walter also asks that we send notice to the justice system that his imprisonment was wrong. He asks that we send a blue envelope to Judge Stuart Hing. The envelope should be sealed – DO NOT PUT ANYTHING IN THE ENVELOPE! And on the back, write: FREE WALTER HOYE as large as possible.
You can address it to:
Alameda County Superior Court
WILEY W. MANUEL COURTHOUSE
Attention: Judge Stuart Hing, Dept. 109
661 Washington Street, Oakland 94607-3922
If you would like to help with Walter’s defense send your contributions to Life Legal Defense Foundation. Their website is – www.lldf.org.
Finally, if you can give of your time, there will be prayer vigils every Sunday starting at 6:30 pm at the prison (Santa Rita Jail 5325 Broder Blvd, Dublin, CA 94568-3309.
As you can see, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. The only question is, what are we willing to give up to protect innocent life? How about to protect our free speech rights?
I could not help but ask myself, if I could be as committed as Walter? If presented with the choice of my freedom or standing for what is right, which would I choose?
Walter’s example has made that choice a little easier for me. How about you?

Gallop: Obama’s most unpopular decision? Funding overseas abortions.

A recent poll conducted by Gallop revealed that of all the decision President Obama has made during his term’s infancy, it was his decision to approve funding for organizations to provide abortions overseas that is most unpopular with voters.
Gallop writes:
…Obama's decision to reverse the prohibition on funding for overseas family-planning providers may be the least popular thing he has done so far. This was an executive order that forbade federal government money from going to overseas family-planning groups that provide abortions or offer abortion counseling. Fifty-eight percent of Americans disapprove of Obama's decision to lift this ban, while only 35% approve of it. The ban on federal funds to these groups was put in place by Ronald Reagan, but lifted by Bill Clinton. George W. Bush re-instituted the ban after taking office in 2001, but Obama has once again lifted it.
And for my fellow GOPer’s who advocate for having abortion striped from our party platform, take note… 92% of Republicans polled opposed overseas funding of abortions.
Keep that in mind!

Roe v. Wade and the making of a President
As one who was also born prior to Roe v. Wade and was unwanted by my paternal parents, this part of the President's story resonates with me. Furthermore, I have come to learn that had Roe been the law of the land in 1969, I myself would likely not be here. Just think, what if our President had been concieved just a few years later?
How many doctors, lawyers, teachers, pastors, community organizers or presidents have been sacrificed on the altar of choice? Is it truly justice to allow one person's right to choose supersede another's right to live?
Just food for thought....

The story of Oscar Grant pales in comparison...
But I am even more saddened that these same protestors and politicians continue to allow 1,200 African American Children to have their lives snuffed out every day. Our children are targeted for profit. The politicians hold ceremonies honoring the slaughter of our children. Heck, the government is the single largest financial supporter of this killing spree! I’m talking about the #1 killer of African Americans: more than three times Aids, violent crimes, accidents, cancer and heart disease all put together… I’m talking about Abortion.
Next week liberals will be falling all over themselves praising the passage of Rove v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court Decision which declared a woman’s right to an abortion to be a constitutionally protected right. However, they will fail to mention that a black baby is now more than three times as likely to have their life taken in the womb than a white baby or that since 1973, abortion has reduced the black population by over 25 percent. How about this one- Every three days, more African-Americans are killed by abortion than have been killed by the Ku Klux Klan in its entire history.
Maybe if we captured these deaths on a camera phone, people would take notice that Plan Parenthood has achieved what the KKK could only have dreamed of!

Why I can't Vote For Barak Reason #1 - He voted against the Infant Born Alive Act
I find it difficult to understand how anyone could vote against protecting the life of a child. This is not about abortion. These are children! To let them die amounts to infanticide.
Here is the story that CNN did:

Abortion = Modern Day Genocide!
While many celebrate the passage of Row v. Wade they ignore the silent genocide that has killed twice as many African Americans as AIDS, Violent Crime, Accidents, Cancer and Heart Disease combined.Consider the following facts taken from abortion providers themselves:
• Abortion has killed more than 13 million African American babies, making it the number one cause of death for Blacks.
• Since 1973, abortion has reduced the black population by over 25 percent.
• Every three days, more African-Americans are killed by abortion than have been killed by the Ku Klux Klan in its entire history.
• A black baby is more than three times as likely to be killed in the womb than a white baby.
• Planned Parenthood operates the nation's largest chain of abortion clinics and almost 80 percent of its facilities are located in minority neighborhoods.
• About 13 percent of American women are black, but they submit to over 35 percent of the abortions.

And while many will refute the claim that these facts point to an organized effort at genocide, the intent of these efforts are revealed in the words of the founder of Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger.
• It [charity] encourages the healthier and more normal sections of the world to shoulder the burden of unthinking and indiscriminate fecundity of others; which brings with it, as I think the reader must agree, a dead weight of human waste. (From Margaret Sanger’s Early Writings 1922)
• Always to me any aroused group was a good group, and therefore I accepted an invitation to talk to the women's branch of the Ku Klux Klan..." (Margaret Sanger’s Autobiography)
• The minister’s work is also important and he should be trained, perhaps by the Federation as to our ideals and the goal that we hope to reach. We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population, and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members (November 1939 memorandum entitled "Suggestions for the Negro Project,”).
THE FACTS DON’T LIE!
The Celebration the passage of Roe vs. Wade is a celebration of the modern day genocide of African Americans. Through abortion, Margaret Sanger and Planned Parenthood have accomplished what the Klu Klux Klan could have only dreamed of… GOVERNMENT FUNDED GENOCIDE!

Standing in the GAP
The Center for Bio-Ethical Reform sponsors The Genocide Awareness Project (GAP) which is:
… a traveling photo-mural exhibit which compares the contemporary genocide of abortion to historically recognized forms of genocide. It visits university campuses around the country to show as many students as possible what abortion actually does to unborn children and get them to think about abortion in a broader historical context.
I know what you are thinking… “Oh great!!! Another Christian, right-wing whacko carrying around disgusting abortion pictures making us ‘Sensitive’ Pro-lifers look bad!” Well nothing could be further from the truth. Those who organize the GAP make every effort to create a positive atmosphere for discussion and dialogue.
It is our policy to treat everyone who approaches the GAP display with respect. We do not yell or use amplified sound. CBR holds staff and volunteers to strict rules of engagement. We know that the images we display are not pleasant. They represent an injustice of such magnitude that words alone fail us. Until injustice is recognized, however, it cannot be eradicated. We place our images in the public square because it is the last mass-media venue available to us. For all the people who will not take the time to be educated about abortion themselves, we bring the education to them.
As a matter of fact, every volunteer must sign a code of conduct before being allowed to participate in the project. It stated that we were not allowed to shout at people or force them to look at the photos. We also were not allowed to bring up religion, unless asked specific questions relating to the topic. But I will tell you, there was plenty of discussion and almost all of it was positive.

I made it a point to share that while I realized that these pictures were upsetting, we were not responsible for what was in them. These photos displayed the reality of abortion… A reality that Planned Parenthood and others in the abortion industry don’t want people to know about.
It was amazing how misinformed many of the folks I spoke with were. One student could not believe that abortion was legal past the first trimester. And when I shared how partial-birth abortions are performed, many of the abortion supporters even had to agree to that it was a barbaric procedure.
And then there were those who were simply in utter denial. One onlooker admitted that he believed a parent’s right to choose should even extend to after the child was born. Another, when confronted with statistics demonstrating the disproportionate number of abortions performed in the Black community, made the statement that most young Black men are in prison anyway. So it was probably a good thing. This was a left-wing, liberal white woman saying this!
There were also those whose perspective on abortion was clearly altered as a result of the discussions that took place. It was hard to look at pictures of 8 and 10 week old aborted children (most of which had visible hands, feet, eyes, etc.) And not at least question whether or not it was a child. And our plea to them was “that if there is any doubt, shouldn’t error on the side of allowing the children to live?”
Person after person shared their personal testimony of how they, their girlfriend or a friend toiled through the process of having an abortion and the devastation it caused in their lives. They said that if they had known the whole truth, they might have made a different decision. In love, we let them know that many of us have made that mistake because we simply didn’t know. And that is why we were there, so that they could be exposed to the information that the abortion industry has intentionally hidden from them.
Most encouraging was the overall response by the students at UC Davis. With very few exceptions, they were gracious, respectfully inquisitive and even those who did not agree with us treated us with respect and recognized our right to freely express our views in the public square.
The folks at UC Davis were class acts and I for one would like to thank them for being so hospitable.

California Young Democrats celebrate 45 million deaths since Roe v. Wade

The California Young Democrats with a coat hanger and a smile visited the offices of California State Legislators to deliver a message celebrating the fact that the number of abortion related deaths has decreased since the passage of Roe v. Wade. But what they don’t mention is the fact that over 45 million babies have been killed in the process.
Their message, which was taped to the coat hanger stated:
Dear Legislator.
This weekend marks the 33rd Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark decisions for a woman’s right to chose. However, as the topic of abortion continues to be relentlessly debated, we hope that you will remember that before 1973 many women were force to choose back-alley options, using items such as coat hangers, to terminate pregnancies instead of seeking proper medical assistance because it was prohibited. The decision to terminate pregnancy is one of the most serious decisions a person can go through. As you vote this year, please consider making sure that women struggling with these decisions have the ability to consult medical professionals that can help them make the best decision.
Sincerely,
California Young Democrats
This appeal is typical of the pro-abortion lobby in that they are selective in the facts they quote when praising Rove v. Wade. According to their own statistics from the Alan Guttmacher Institute:
52% of U.S. women obtaining abortions are younger than 25: Women aged 20-24 obtain 33% of all abortions, and teenagers obtain 19%.
Black women are more than 3 times as likely as white women to have an abortion, and Hispanic women are 2 1/2 times as likely.
2/3 of all abortions are among never-married women.
Over 60% of abortions are among women who have had 1 or more children.
48% of abortions are among women who have previously had an abortion.
27% of abortions are among women who are pregnant for the first time.
On average, women give at least 3 reasons for choosing abortion: 3/4 say that having a baby would interfere with work, school or other responsibilities; about 2/3 say they cannot afford a child; and 1/2 say they do not want to be a single parent or are having problems with their husband or partner.
A Few interesting facts to note:
1. According to their numbers, about 1 in 5 abortions are performed on minors.
2. Notice that Rape, incest or the health of the mother are not on the list of reasons why women are ending their pregnancies.
3. Abortion advocate’s efforts to terminate of the pregnancies of ethnic minorities (blacks in particular) have been overwhelmingly successful.
I fail to recognize what there actually is to celebrate… 45 million dead babies? Black genocide? Abortion as a contraceptive? Sacrificing our daughters on the altar of reproductive choice?
Just a little perspective…

Why did Prop 73 Lose?

Consider this fact which was part of a San Francisco Chronicle article published this morning:
Opponents raised more than $3 million and spent more than half of it on a television campaign in the state's largest media markets that featured a 30-second spot in which an actress portraying a mother said: "Prop. 73 can't force teenagers to talk to their parents."
Supporters of Prop. 73 only contributed a little more than $1.2 million; of which, around $1million was donated by a handful of individuals and was spent qualifying the measure for the ballot.
Most of the more than $1.2 million that campaign supporters raised came from three contributors: James Holman, publisher of the weekly San Diego Reader and a string of Catholic newspapers; Tom Monaghan, the founder of Domino's Pizza; and Don Sebastiani, a Sonoma vintner and former state lawmaker.
This means that the abortion industry outspent us by more than 10-1.
The enemies of family and moral values have made it clear that they are willing to invest heavily into the demoralization of society. They have let them take over popular culture through music, movies television and video games. We have allowed them to become entrenched at every level of public educational. And slowly, but surely we are handing over control of the civil government to the most immoral and evil forces America has ever seen. It is no one’s fault but our own.
Imagine if everyone of the 3 million plus voters for Prop. 73 gave one dollar to help pass in it’s passage? Even if just 10 % of those voters had given a mere $10 proponents of this initiative would have been able to match the abortion industry dollar for dollar…commercial for commercial.
In my commentary “Do you Support Prop. 73? ” I wrote:
If we, those who value parent’s rights, those who value the well being of our children, those of us who value life…If we do not step up step up to the plate and support this initiative, it will fail. And please understand, support is not a passive thing.
We truly support those people and causes to which we give of our resources. Our time, our talent and our treasury…These are our resources. And anyone can give. If you only can spare and hour or two of your time to make phone calls, knock on doors or stuff envelopes, that support means something. Even if you can only give $10, that is $10 more to help pass this initiative.
But if you have not given of your resources: your time, talent or treasury, then you are not a supporter of Prop 73. You’re a cheerleader… a well wisher… but not a supporter.
So did you truly support Prop. 73? Or were you just a Cheerleader?

Parental Notification Initiative Fails by Slim Margin
What the vote came down to is whether or not folks saw this as an issue related to abortion or an issue related to parents' rights," said Craig DeLuz, a spokesman for the California Parents Rights Coalition, which backed the measure."Most parents agree parents should be involved in any major medical decision, including abortion," DeLuz said.

THE LIE CONTINUES! Past President of American Academy of Pediatrics says study distorted to defeat Prop. 73
Dr. Joseph Zanga says:
“The AAP authors cited the Henshaw study for four points, and in each case they misrepresented the results of the study. Unfortunately, this misinformation has been repeated countless times by opponents of Proposition 73 and extensively reported in the media. We hope that AAP, Planned Parenthood, and the media will do the right thing and acknowledge these errors”
The following is the full press release that came to me this morning from the California Parent’s Rights Coalition:
American Academy of Pediatrics Caught in Scientific Deception…
PAST PRESIDENT SAYS STUDY IS DISTORTED TO DEFEAT PROPOSITION 73
SACRAMENTO- The current president of the American College of Pediatricians and a past president of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), along with two other California physicians, have called on AAP to immediately withdraw “for correction and further study” its statement opposing parental involvement laws, including Proposition 73 in California. The physicians, all Fellows of AAP, cite “indisputable inaccuracy and bias” in an AAP study that is being used to distort the truth in effort to defeat Prop 73.
Joseph Zanga, M.D., FAAP, along with Jane Anderson, M.D., FAAP, a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco, and Paul Macdonald, M.D., FAAP, a pediatrician in private practice in Ukiah, sent a letter Monday to the current AAP president challenging the numerous significant errors in the AAP statement, errors that have been repeated by Proposition 73 opponents and widely disseminated by the mass media.
Dr. Zanga, professor of pediatrics at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, was President of the AAP from 1997 to 1998 and currently serves on its Bioethics Committee.
Several misrepresentations in the AAP statement involve a 1992 study of minors seeking abortion by Stanley Henshaw and Kathryn Kost. In 2003, Dr. Henshaw testified that the AAP statement concerning the percentage of minors who inform a parent of their planned abortion in the absence of parental involvement laws was “entirely incorrect.”
Other areas in which the AAP statement was false included the most frequent reasons minors cited for not telling parents and the percentage of minors who involve an adult other than a parent in their decision.
According to Dr. Macdonald, “Though I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt, the distortion and misquotation of data are so obvious that I am forced to conclude that the AAP authors are attempting to promote a specific political agenda.” He added, “I was angered and saddened that, in the nine years since the original publication of this statement, no update has been approved correcting these egregious errors. Any high school student comparing the AAP statement with the Henshaw study could spot these errors.”
“The AAP authors cited the Henshaw study for four points, and in each case they misrepresented the results of the study. Unfortunately, this misinformation has been repeated countless times by opponents of Proposition 73 and extensively reported in the media. We hope that AAP, Planned Parenthood, and the media will do the right thing and acknowledge these errors,” Dr. Anderson said.

Study shows Parental Involvement Laws reduce teen abortion rates…Vote Yes on Prop 73!
Opponents of Prop 73 (The Parental Notification Initiative) have repeatedly stated that parental notification laws have no affect on abortion rates amongst minors. Well an unpublished study by Michael J. New Ph.D. at the University of Alabama shows that to be a bold faced lie.In his study Analyzing the Effect of Pro-Life Legislation on the Incidence of Abortion Among Minors, New points out the following:
In 1990 Minnesota passed a parental involvement law
In 1989 the teen abortion rate was 12.92 abortions for every thousand women age 13-17
In 1999 the teen abortion rate was 6.00 abortions for every thousand women age 13-17
A decline of 53.6%
In 1993 Mississippi passed a parental involvement law
In 1992 the teen abortion rate was 7.29 abortions for every thousand women age 13-17
In 1999 the teen abortion rate was 3.44 abortions for every thousand women age 13-17
A decline of 52.8%
In 1989 Georgia passed a parental involvement law
In 1988 the teen abortion rate was 18.33 abortions for every thousand women age 13-17
In 1999 the teen abortion rate was 11.42 abortions for every thousand women age 13-17
A decline of 37.7%
In 1991 Nebraska passed a parental involvement law
In 1990 the teen abortion rate was 13.31 abortions for every thousand women age 13-17
In 1999 the teen abortion rate was 6.85 abortions for every thousand women age 13-17
A decline of 48.5%
In 1997 Virginia passed a parental involvement law
In 1996 the teen abortion rate was 15.10 abortions for every thousand women age 13-17
In 1999 the teen abortion rate was 11.23 abortions for every thousand women age 13-17
A decline of 25.6%
Source for Abortion Data, Center for Disease Control
Source for Legislation, NARAL’s Who Decides?
And while planned parenthood will argue that teens will simply leave the state to obtain an abortion, New refutes that assumption in a letter he wrote to the LA Times stating:
…there is no scholarly consensus that any reductions in abortions caused by parental involvement laws are offset by increases in neighboring states. In fact, separate academic studies that have examined parental involvement laws in Mississippi, Massachusetts, and Minnesota have found that these laws have lowered the number of abortions performed on minors both inside and outside state boundaries.
Please share this study with everyone you know. Don’t count on the MSM to report this information. They will continue to perpetuate the lie of Planned Parenthood and the Abortion Industry.
It’s up to us to get the truth out there!

Pro-Family Pressure forces out truth on Anti-Prop. 73 Article

The following is a press release issued this morning by the California Parent’s Rights Coalition:
Sends Correction to California Clients
SACRAMENTO -- In a response to claims by the California Parents Rights Coalition that he blatantly lied to the California voters in his column about Proposition 73, syndicated columnist Tom Elias admitted his mistake and sent the following clarification to his 79 California newspaper clients.
"In a previous column, Proposition 73 was mistakenly referred to as a 'parental consent' measure, requiring consent from a judge or from parents of minor females seeking abortions. It is in fact a parental notification measure, requiring (with a few exceptions) written notice to parents at least 48 hours before such procedures."
In a further statement, Mr. Elias claimed that "the error was made because I have frequently dealt with the entire issue of parental consent and simply misstated the measure."
"Thanks to Mr. Elias contacting us, we now understand that he is not being paid for his opposition to 73," said Matson Breakey, campaign coordinator for the coalition, "but his 'misstatement' was highly damaging to our efforts and created much confusion for voters."
"We hope that he will take the time in future articles to research what he is writing about before he 'mistakenly' damages another organization or effort," said Matson.
Mr. Elias wrote in a column that appeared in several California newspapers that Prop 73 required written permission from a parent or guardian. In actual fact, it only requires that a parent or guardian is notified of the impending abortion 48 hours before the procedure.

Does Planned Parenthood cover up sexual abuse of children? Listen to the tapes and judge for yourself!
(Click Here) to hear over 90 phone conversations between a 13 year old girl and Planned Parenthood abortion clinics across the state. During each conversation, the girl intimates:
1. She is only 13 years old.
2. She may be pregnant (indicating that she is sexually active.)
3. Her boyfriend is 22 years old (Keep in mind, this is most likely the guy with whom she is having sex.)
4. She doesn’t want anyone to know. (She wants to cover up statutory rape.)
And in each and every call the Planned Parenthood representative assured the minor that nobody would know she was having sex with a 22 year old man!
Woodland, Chico, Sacramento, Orange, San Diego, Bakersfield…. Clinics in over 90 cities California cities are on this list. Check out how the Planned Parenthood in your neighborhood responded to the call.

Planned Parenthood puts up $1.1 million to defeat Prop. 73, the Parental Notification Initiative

Compared to other measures on the November special election ballot, Prop. 73 hasn’t attracted much in the way of financial support or opposition. Also (and this is no surprise), Planned Parenthood is the largest donor to date contributing more than $1.1 million to keep parents from being knowing that their minor children are being subjected to an abortion,, an invasive medical procedure.
As reported by the California Healthcare Foundation, the top donors against Prop 73 are as follows:
1. PLANNED PARENTHOOD MAR MONTE- $343,451
2. PLANNED PARENTHOOD OF SAN DIEGO-$278,313
3. PLANNED PARENTHOOD SHASTA - DIABLO ACTION FUND- $203,677
4. PLANNED PARENTHOOD AFFILIATES OF CALIFORNIA- $191,541
5. PLANNED PARENTHOOD ORANGE AND SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES- $110,970
6. REBECCA Q. MORGAN- $100,000
7. CALIFORNIA FAMILY HEALTH COUNCIL, INC.- $50,000
TOTAL= $1,277,952
What is really disturbing is that almost all of the $1.2 million raised by Prop. 73 supporters was needed to qualify the initiative; which means that there is very little left to help pass the measure. Only $125,700 is left to fund a statewide campaign to pass one of the most important initiatives in our state has ever had a chance to vote on.
How can I make this any clearer? If you have not yet given to help pass Proposition 73… CLICK HERE AND DO IT!

Liberal Media Can't Dispute Common Sense of Parental Notification
This morning was my first interview with the liberal media on Prop. 73, the Parental Notification Initiative. The interesting part was that they could not discredit the initiative, so they went after those of us who support it.
The interview was with Stacy Taylor, a local morning show host on AM 1360, San Diego's Air America affiliate. Suprisingly, Taylor was in favor of the initiative. To him, it just made sense that parents should know if an invassive medical procedure is going to be performed on their minor child.
But his co-host was not so reasonable. He spent most of the interview decrying my prolife stance, declaring this to be part of the vast right wing conspiracy to deprive women the right to abort their babies and accusing me of trying to legislate morality. And needless to say, any attempt answer his obviously loaded questions were shouted down as soon as he didn't get the response he wanted. For example, he refused to believe that both Senators Hillary Clinton and John Kerry have stated publically that they support parental notification. He had no answer when I pointed out that in1987 a Democrat controled California Legislature passed parental consent legislation that would later be upheld by the California Supreme Court. (The court would reverse itself less than a year later after replacing a judge who supported parental rights with a more radical supporter of abortion.)
Stacy and even some of his callers seemed to have a heartfelt desire to understnd the issue. But they also had a hard time getting passed the fact that it was members of the prolife movement who were the biggest supporters of 73.
I tried to explain that abortion is such a politically charged and divisive issue that whenever one concedes that the other side might have a valid point, they are attacked and branded as a traitor. He asked why I, an obvious supporter of restrictions on abortion was on with him instead of someone who was prochoice. At the time I didn't have an answer for him except to say that 40 percent of prochoice voters polled said they supported parental notification.
But later it came to me that the reason why prochoice advocates were so quiet in their support is because they don't want to be ridiculed and berated by their liberal friends. One only listen to the visceral hatred spewed from Park's sidekick and a number of his callers to know that rational discourse is not possible with many on the extreme left (or right for that matter.)
Anyway, I think if those on the left look at this initiative with an open eye they will see that it os just common sense. I don't know Stacy Parks well but he seems to be willing to do that.
